Know who can keep the grid running, before someone retires

For HR, training and operations leaders at utilities, grid and reliability organisations, energy storage and renewables companies. MuchSkills shows who holds each critical skill and at what level, where only one person can do the work, and whose certificate expires next, across every site and team.

01Bench strength by skill

How many people can do each critical task today, at what level, not an average.

02Who knows what

Find the expert in another office or site in one search.

03Competence records

Certificates with numbers, dates and proof files, validated by managers, with the full history kept.

The know-how sits with a few people, in a few heads

Ask who can step in for your most experienced engineer and the answer is a name or two, from memory. Ask how strong the bench is for a critical task and someone opens a spreadsheet that averages ratings across the team.

The spreadsheet that averages

Bench strength is a number per task, and nobody can see that one person carries it.

The expert nobody can find

A new hire at one site needs an answer that a colleague two sites away knows, and has no way to find them.

The certificates in five places

Certificate PDFs in inboxes, expiry dates in a team spreadsheet, course completions in the LMS.

An average hides the risk. One expert and three beginners can look like a team of four that is doing fine.

Bench strength you can count, task by task

Set the skills each critical task or role needs and the level it needs. MuchSkills then shows how many people meet it, how many are close and who is the only holder.

Check which skills are one resignation away

Holders by level

See beginners, intermediates and experts for every skill, so one expert and two beginners stop reading as three people.

The one-person skills

See which critical skills have a single holder, by team and site.

Who is closest

See who is nearest the level the role needs, and give them a named goal and the training to get there.

Demand against capacity

The Demand report compares the skills your projects need with the people who hold them, per level, so you can decide where to hire and where to upskill.

Find the expert at another site in one search

Search by skill, certificate, level, team or location and get the people who can answer, wherever they sit. Useful when a new hire at one office takes a question that a colleague at another office knows best, and when a project needs a specialist from the whole organisation.

Search across every site

Discover finds people by skills, certificates and availability, even when you are not sure of the exact skill name.

One profile per person

Skills, levels, certificates and work history in one place, kept current by the person and their manager.

Organisation view

See every skill by department, location or tag, and narrow it to the people who can do the work today.

Competence records that hold up when someone checks

For each role, the skills at the level it needs and the certificates it requires, with each person shown as meeting the role, close to it or missing something. When a regulator, client or auditor asks, the evidence is already in one place.

See how certification tracking works

Certificates with proof

Each certificate holds its number, issue and expiry dates and the proof file, for example a NERC System Operator certification or a Professional Engineer licence.

Validated by managers

Managers validate the skills and certificates people add, so the record shows what has been checked and by whom.

Reminders before expiry

Holders are reminded 90, 60 and 30 days before a certificate expires and on the day, and managers see the status in their team view.

History kept

Every change is logged, who changed what and when, and the full history is kept. Download every certificate and proof file for the people you select.

One skill list per team and level, not per job title

When job titles run into the hundreds, writing a skill profile for each one takes months, and keeping them all current takes a team.

Define the skills for each team and career level instead, with a different required level at each step. A staff engineer and a senior engineer share one list with different targets.

Start from a library of 20,000 industry-specific skills, 12,000+ technical skills and 9,700+ certifications, or keep the framework and rating scale you already use. Our team builds the first version with you.

Questions energy and utility teams ask

Not answered here? A real person replies, usually the same working day.

Every question, in the FAQ
What are role-based skills tracking tools for energy companies?

Role-based skills tracking tools record the skills, levels and certificates each role needs, measure what each person holds against them, and show the gaps by person, team, site and role. MuchSkills does this on profiles that people and their managers keep current, so energy and utility teams can see bench strength, single points of failure and expiring certificates without rerunning a survey.

How do utilities track employee competencies and certifications?

Most start with spreadsheets, the LMS and certificate files in email. MuchSkills brings them into one competence record: what each role requires, and what each person holds, validated by a manager, with certificate numbers, dates, proof files, reminders before expiry and the full history of every change.

How do you measure bench strength in a utility workforce?

List the tasks or skills you cannot run without, set the level each needs and how critical it is, then count how many people meet that level today. Count holders by level rather than averaging ratings, because an average hides a task that rests on one expert. MuchSkills shows holders by level for every skill and flags the skills with a single holder.

How can a utility capture who knows what before experienced staff retire?

Find the critical skills held by one person, by team and site, then name who is closest to the level the role needs and set a development goal with training to close the gap. Start years ahead of the retirement date if you can.

Can MuchSkills track NERC certifications?

Yes. Any certificate can be recorded on a person’s profile with its number, issue and expiry dates and the proof file, including NERC System Operator certifications. Holders are reminded before expiry, managers validate the record, and every change is kept in the history.

Is MuchSkills a learning management system?

No. MuchSkills holds the skills, levels and certificates people have and the ones each role needs. Your LMS delivers the training, and MuchSkills picks up started and completed courses through its API.

Is employee data safe in MuchSkills?

Yes. MuchSkills is GDPR compliant and hosts customer personal data in the EU. It does not use that data to train, fine-tune or improve any third-party AI model, and its AI sub-processors are contractually prohibited from doing so. Its information security management is aligned to ISO/IEC 27001, with certification in progress. Details are in our Trust Center.

How much does MuchSkills cost?

MuchSkills plans combine an annual platform fee with a price per user, and SSO, SCIM and the open API come with every plan. Non-profit organisations get 50% off. Onboarding is sized to your organisation and quoted before you sign. Book a demo and we will send you a quote.

See your bench strength with your own data

Bring one team and its critical tasks to a 60-minute demo with Daniel Nilsson. We will show you holders by level, the one-person skills and the certificates that expire next.

Who can cover substation commissioning when Erik retires next spring?

Two people, with one goal each. Anna Ek is one level short and has an understudy goal. Omar Said needs IEC 61850 training, booked for March.
